The internship at the Sonnblick Observatory (SBO) was a great opportunity to gain a better understanding of the practical aspects of climate research, take a look behind the scenes, and get hands-on experience in station maintenance.

My name is Pamina Röhle and I am in my third semester of a master's degree in “Climate Change and Societal Transformation” at BOKU University in Vienna, with a focus on climate sciences.
In February 2026, I had the opportunity to spend two weeks working at the SBO station. This allowed me to take a look behind the scenes, learn about some ongoing research projects, and develop a better understanding of the measuring instruments and the type of data collection carried out on site.
I was also allowed to help with the daily and weekly routines.
I helped with measurements and sampling during the early shift, recorded climate observations several times a day, and participated in ongoing projects. These included regular filter changes, maintenance activities, and, for example, photographing snowflakes for the avalanche warning service. :)
In addition, as part of a small project, I analyzed measurement data on clouds, aerosols, and corresponding meteorological parameters to investigate correlations in cloud formation. By looking at extreme values, I was able to identify the influences of individual variables on, for example, particle concentration and liquid water content, and gain a better understanding of the conditions that influence and promote aerosol content and cloud formation.
It was a really great experience to spend this time at an altitude of 3106m in winter, to be able to delve deeper into the subject matter and to be in a setting where everyday life follows a much quieter rhythm than I am used to in the city.
