The closest settlement in Carinthia is the village Heiligenblut and in Salzburg - the village Rauris.The observatory was built at the alpine ridge allowing measurements of unrestricted incident air flow. The Sonnblick Observatory is surrounded by glacier and rocks and is defined as high-alpine.
