WMO-GAW

WMO-GAW is a programme  of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and is the abbreviation for "Global Atmosphere Watch".
The GAW-Programme focus on the retrieval and supply of reliable scientific data and information related to the chemical composition of the atmosphere, its natural and anthropogenic change and helps to improve our understanding of interactions between atmosphere, biosphere and the oceans.

Focal areas are:

  • aerosols
  • reactive gases
  • greenhouse gases
  • ozone
  • ultraviolet solar radiation
  • total atmospheric deposition
  • GURME: GAW Urban Research Meteorology and Environment

The backbone of GAW are the measurement stations. The GAW-Programme divides the stations into global, regional and contributing stations. Currently GAW counts 31 global, more than 400 regional and around 100 contributing stations.
The Sonnblick Observatory was upgraded from a regional to a global GAW station in May 2016 underlining the international importance of measurements at Mt. Hoher Sonnblilck.
